Pomorie MonasterySt. Velikomuchenik Georgi Pobedonosets, also known as Pomorie Monastery, is situated 20 km away from Bourgas in the coastal town of Pomorie.

The monastery has been named a monument of culture. It was constructed in 1856, but a chapel existed in the area back in the 7th century.

According to a legend, a merchant named Selim Bei got sick. His servant found a spring in the area where the chapel used to exist. The spring water cured Selim Bei and he constructed a new sanctuary.

Pomorie Monastery’ church was constructed in 1856 and its bell tower came into existence in 1966. The church lacks wall paintings but is known for its valuable icons.

The miraculous spring still flows there.

Goliamoboukovski MonasteryGoliamoboukovski Monastery is situated three km away from the village of Goliamo Boukovo and 58 km away from Bourgas. The monastery is situated in the very heart of Strandzha Mountain and is the only active one in the region.

Archaeologists believe that the monastery existed as far back in time as the 13th and 14th centuries.

Goliamoboukovski Monastery underwent renovation in 1887. New buildings were constructed in 1903.

In the years to come the monastery was forgotten and started falling apart. Goliamoboukovski monastery started functioning once again in the autumn of 1990. The church reopened and monks settled there.

A new building was constructed and is currently used to offer monastery visitors accommodation.

Gornoezerovski MonasteryGornoezerovski Monastery St. Bogoroditsa is situated only several km away from the coastal city of Bourgas.

A narrow road passing between the districts of Gorno Ezerovo and Meden Roudnik will take you to the sanctuary.

According to legends, a Thracian sanctuary used to exist in the area. Bulgarians constructed an Orthodox temple there. The monastery complex primarily appeared in the 12th century.

Gornoezerovski Monastery was forgotten for a certain period of time but people decided to renovate it in 1982.

Two churches, residential buildings, a kitchen and storage areas are part of the complex today.

In addition, the complex contains 40 chapels. Each one is named after a saint and constructed over healing water springs.

Many Bourgas residents and visitors select the region as a picnic spot.

picture-002Kabilenski Monastery is situated six km away from the town of Yambol, near the village of Kabile. Its official name is Rozhdestvo na Bogoroditsa.

Legends explain that the monastery existed back in the 4th and 5th centuries. It was mostly famous for the healing power of its spring

The monastery was completely destroyed in the beginning of the Ottoman rule. Only legends were told about it.

Monastery renovation began in 1944. Today, several nuns are taking care of the monastery complex.
